Dale Harris, M.D.
Family Practice

Education and Training
Dr. Dale Harris graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania in 1976, majoring in Chemistry and Biology. He attended Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, receiving his medical degree in 1980. He completed his residency training at the University of California-Davis Sacramento Medical Center in Family Medicine.

Dr. Harris and his wife, Dr. Petrofes, celebrated 25 years at Dunes Family Health Care in 2011. Educated at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, he returned to the state of his birth for internship and residency at UC Davis/Sacramento Medical Center. He was Board Certified in Family Medicine in July of 1983.

As a recipient of a 3-year National Health Service Scholarship for medical school, he repaid his obligation by working 3 years at Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, AZ. This isolated facility on the Navajo reservation in Northeastern Arizona helped further develop the range of skills required for working in a rural area.  He established an outlying clinic and received the Health Administrator’s Award from the NHSC for his service.

Drs. Harris and Petrofes interviewed widely in Northern California and Oregon choosing DFHC as the best fit for themselves and daughter Abby, born in 1986. Son Patrick, born at Lower Umpqua Hospital in 1988, completed their family.  Working two half days and two full days each week in addition to taking call and covering the Emergency Room allowed them some extra time for raising their children.

During this time Dr. Harris served on the Reedsport City Council from 1990 until 2000.  He was Council President from 1998-2000.  He has served as a physician medical examiner for Douglas County since 1988 assisting with death investigations. DFHC has provided medical care at Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in Hauser.

He maintains his Board Certification in Family Medicine with over 50 hours of continuing medical education a year and periodic examinations.  He has Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.  He is a long time member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a member of the American Philatelic Association as well as a member of Oregon Track Club and South Coast Runners Club.

With children raised and graduated from college (Abby: St. Marys College of California 2008; Patrick:   University of Oregon 2012), Dr. Harris has had some more time for long distance running, cooking, reading, attending Duck games and other activities.  He plans to continue working as a family physician seeing patients at Dunes Family Health Care.
