Pharmacy Clerk
Job Summary
Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Clerk performs clerical duties to support the distribution of medications and pharmacy services. This is a non-licensed pharmacy personnel position, and the employee cannot engage in the duties of a licensed pharmacy technician or any other function that can impact the outcome of a prescription.
Essential Duties
- Performs all job duties and functions within the scope of practice for non-licensed pharmacy personnel, as defined by the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy.
- Demonstrates proficiency in clerical and cashier duties, such as management of files and records and operation of the point of sale system (cash register).
- Answers and triages telephone inquiries, and refers questions requiring professional judgment to pharmacy technicians and/or pharmacists.
- Provides excellent customer service by responding to customers’ inquiries and concerns.
- Enters patient demographics information into the computer and performs housekeeping and bookkeeping duties.
- Assists with inventory management by sending and receiving orders to replenish the pharmacy’s stock, unpacking and pricing drugs, placing drugs on the shelves, performing inventory counts, pulling outdated stock, and immediately reporting any discrepancies to the pharmacist.
- Assists with maintenance of records for medications, procurement, and distribution under the guidance of the pharmacist and following state and federal regulations.
- Accurately loads and maintains the pharmacy Will-Call System for quick retrieval of medications to be dispensed or sold to patients or to be returned to stock.
- Demonstrates proficiency in hospital computer systems, software programs, and applicable office equipment.
- Displays the ability to interact professionally and communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with members of the pharmacy, other healthcare professionals, and the public.
- Assists in the maintenance of a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment.
- Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality, think independently, and act with supervision.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload effectively, handle multiple tasks, and make critical decisions to ensure pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner.
- Maintains regular, consistent, and punctual attendance at the assigned job location.
- Participates in department and staff meetings and committees.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualification Requirements
Education and License
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required and must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
Certifications
- None required.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of pharmacy work or clerical experience preferred.
Work Environment
Works indoors in an air-conditioned office environment.
Physical Demands
Frequent use of computer and phone, and standard office machines. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, push, pull using proper body mechanics and move or lift varying amounts of weight up to a maximum of 50 lbs.
