Operating Room Technician

Job Summary

The OR Tech is responsible for assisting in the care and promotion of comfort and safety of patients according to ability, knowledge, and behaviors described in the Operating Room/Central Sterilization Policies and Procedures. Accountable to the OR/CS Nurse Manager and the circulating nurse assigned to the operating room.

Essential Duties

1. Is considerate and courteous when interacting with patients, visitors, and other nursing staff members.
2. Under supervision, assists with general nursing activities in the OR.
3. Assists with the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile equipment and supplies necessary for surgical intervention.
4. Assists with general housekeeping and clerical duties of the department; runs errands, takes messages, and helps transport patients.
5. Maintains sterile technique for good patient care.
6. Assists the surgeon and anticipates needs.
7. Responsible for instruments and sutures.
8. Demonstrates knowledge of instruments and the order of use.
9. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy.
10. Interacts with staff in a positive, friendly, and supportive manner.
11. Utilizes policies and procedures as developed by the Surgical/PACU/CS department and Lower Umpqua Hospital.
12. Attends hospitality training provided by Lower Umpqua Hospital.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

Education and License

• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• Successful completion of an educational program for surgical technologists accredited by a national accreditation organization approved by the Oregon Health Authority.
• Must hold and maintain certification approved by authority rule (or be grandfathered/exempt under the law; documentation required).

Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) (required, or within 30 days of hire).

Experience

• Prior experience preferred.

1. Work requires availability for call as needed or scheduled.
2. Work requires long periods of standing and walking.
3. Work requires lifting of light and heavy objects for short periods of time.
4. Work requires good physical, emotional, and mental health.
5. May be called to work in the event of a disaster.

Work Environment

Works indoors in an air-conditioned environment.

Physical Demands

Frequent use of computer and phone, and other standard office machines. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, push, pull using proper body mechanics and move/lift varying amounts of weight to a maximum of 50 lbs.
