Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Job Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) demonstrates compassion, respect, and a caring attitude while providing quality patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed nurse. The CNA works in collaboration with other healthcare team members and communicates effectively with coworkers, patients, visitors, physicians, and other disciplines and departments. The CNA will have completed the Oregon State Board of Nursing approved CNA training program and understands the scope of practice this level of training allows.
Essential Duties
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADL’s) including AM/PM care, bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting; assist with bedpans, urinals, and commodes.
- Perform oral care, hair care, peri-care, and catheter care.
- Provide backrubs and special skin care as needed.
- Monitor and record intake and output.
- Weigh patients and document weight as ordered by physician.
- Deliver and set up meal trays and assist with feeding as needed; keep patients supplied with fresh drinking water if allowed.
- Assist with repositioning, transferring (bed/chair/commode/stretcher), ambulation, and range of motion (ROM) activities.
- Take vital signs on adults, children, and infants as directed.
- Accurately document and report to nurse any abnormal findings, change in status, observations, concerns, or complaints.
- Assist with special procedures as directed (admissions/discharges, pre- and post-operative care, post-mortem care).
- Answer call lights in a courteous and timely manner; position call light within reach of the patient.
- Assist in ICU rooms when needed.
- Maintain an attractive, safe, and comfortable patient environment; keep rooms neat and tidy and ensure safety measures are in use.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment in areas including nurses’ station, utility room, linen room, pantry, lounge, and other areas as applicable.
- Re-stock patient supplies.
- Monitor patient care equipment to maintain good working order and safe patient use.
- Perform all other functions defined in scope of practice and within training knowledge as directed by supervisor.
- Upon discharge, strip bed.
- Deposit dirty linen in laundry hampers; remove bags to storage bin in utility room when bag is half full.
- Chart daily on all swing bed patients.
- Order supplies.
- Clean equipment after use (e.g., pumps, IV poles, etc.).

End-of-shift tasks include:
- Empty linen hamper.
- Refill ice bucket.
- Clean both utility rooms.
- Empty trash in all patient rooms (including ICU).
- Ensure all over-bed tables are clean and clutter-free.
- Clean break room and report room.
- Fill linen carts.
Qualification Requirements
Education and License
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- Completion of an Oregon State Board of Nursing approved CNA training program.
Certifications
- Current CNA certificate from Oregon State Board of Nursing.
- Current CPR certificate.
Additional Qualifications
- Good reading and writing skills, computer knowledge, and legible handwriting.
- Good communication skills, verbal and nonverbal.
- Adequate vision to read normal print and carry out essential duties.
- Adequate hearing to hear speech, call bells, buzzers, phones, etc.
- Willing and able to change work routine to accommodate fluctuating census and needs of other departments.
Work Environment
Works indoors in an air-conditioned office environment.
Physical Demands
Frequent use of computer and phone, and other standard office machines. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, push, pull using proper body mechanics and move/lift varying amounts of weight to a maximum of 50 lbs.
