Job Summary

A Medical Technician has the appropriate background to perform laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols, which require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision; maintains equipment and records; and performs quality assurance activities related to test performance. The medical technician performs a broad range of laboratory procedures.

Essential Duties

1. Prepares for use and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus.
2. Prepares reagents and specimens for processing.
3. Performs all clinical laboratory tests.
4. Evaluates quality control results.
5. Follows up and documents actions relating to abnormal panic results.
6. Prepares specimens for send outs.
7. Draws blood, using standard venipuncture techniques and equipment to obtain lab specimens from patients of all ages.
8. Performs clerical functions.
9. Consults with other lab staff, health personnel on test results, specimen requirements and testing protocols.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with the hospital’s mission, vision, and values.
11. Interaction with others: Interacts with patients, patient’s families, hospital staff, volunteers, clients and physicians. May mean dealing with those who are impatient, distraught or demanding.
12. Time/deadline/shift/overtime/call requirement: Overtime may result when workload is heavy or during periods of short staffing.
13. Flexibility requirements: Must deal with a variety of people. Need to be flexible with fluctuating size of patient load and work on a flexible schedule.
14. Pace requirements: Pace is set by patient load and type of procedures. Must maintain efficient pace and correctly prioritize workload.
15. Communication skills required: Requires dealing with patients, physicians, co-workers, and hospital staff in a professional, tactful manner. Must speak clearly so as to be easily understood.
16. Emotional stability requirements: Necessary for dealing with sick and injured patients.
17. Attention to detail requirements: Required in performing clerical and procedural tasks with constant distractions. Must be able to verify that all work prior to receipt of specimen for testing is performed correctly. Responsible for own work in the area of clinical laboratory testing.
18. Highly repetitive requirements: Performing keyboarding, labeling, filing and other paper work.
19. Create and organize an orderly environment in the lab.
20. Process specimens on analyzers.
21. Entering patient reports into computer.

Qualification Requirements

Education and License

• AA in Physical Science

Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• MLT Certification, Nationally Recognized

Experience

• Prior experience, preferred. Prior employment, education or training in clinical laboratory science required.

Additional Qualifications

1. Ability to read scientific and technical journals abstracts and reference manuals.
2. Ability to perform complex tasks requiring extensive knowledge of department’s work.
3. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking.
4. Ability to apply practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratios, proportion measurements, and practical algebra.
5. Ability to handle minor instrument repairs.
6. Ability to use a computer and to be able to accurately input patient reports.

Work Environment

1. Works indoors in an air-conditioned environment.
2. Must have good manual dexterity of one or both hands.
3. Handles small light objects frequently.
4. Employs fine hand movements when manipulating instruments and computer terminal keyboard. This is light work requiring good corrected vision, the ability to identify and distinguish colors, the ability to do near point, or close up, work at varying distances from the eye.
5. Chemical exposures, safety hazards and protective equipment.
6. Must practice universal precautions when dealing with blood or other body fluids.

Physical Demands

Frequent use of computer and phone, and other standard office machines. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, push, pull using proper body mechanics and move/lift varying amounts of weight to a maximum of 50 lbs.
